For the 20th year in a row, Nordic Library Week (NLW) is inviting everyone to bask in the light of literature on dark November evenings. Libraries, schools, kindergartens and community centres in the Nordic countries and Baltic States are welcome to take part and turn their gaze to the future – since this year’s library week bears the title ‘The Future in the Nordics’. Literature and the future will unite the countries in the region: stories will be told to youngsters as the sun rises at 9:00, while there will be reading hours for adults at 19:00 as dusk sets in.

The future will be reflected this year in the texts and books selected for the story hours. The future is something that unites us all and to which we are all connected in one way or another. It may seem exciting and full of promise to us, or uncertain and a bit scary – or both at the same time.

Participation in library week is based on the same system as in previous years: you need to register on the NWL website. There you can download this year’s poster and take a look at the literature that has been selected: Garmann’s Summer (by Stian Hole) for children’s hour, the teen fiction series of novels Allatta! 2040 and the adult fantasy/sci-fi novel Memory of Water (by Emmi Itäranta).

Nordic Library Week on Facebook and Instagram

This year there will also be a NLW photo competition on Facebook and Instagram. Pictures should reflect the theme of ‘The Future in the North’ or show how NLW is being marked at your school or library. Upload your photos to Instagram or Facebook during the week with the hashtag #nordbib16. The best pictures will be in line to win some great prizes.

All of the institutions that take part in NLW are also invited to promote their activities on this year’s library week Facebook page, where we recommend you share any details about exciting events (invitations, programmes, pictures, videos and more).

NLW meet-and-greets with Zinaida Lindén

Meet-and-greets will be held with Zinaida Lindén from Finland during the evenings in library week. Russian-born but long since Finland-based Zinaida Lindén will be talking to readers at 16:30 on 16 November at Narva Central Library, at 16:00 on 17 November at Sillamäe Central Library and at 17:00 on 18 November in the Foreign Language Literature Department of Tallinn Central Library.

The visit of Zinaida Lindén is supported by project Nordic writers across borders.
