Gender equality means equal rights and opportunities in all areas – politics, economy, daily life; it is a human right and concerns both genders. Feminism raises the issue of inequality of men and women in society and questions the established norms.

The feminist movement and the fight for gender equality still has a long way to go before their goals are achieved. Each and every one of us can notice the importance of discussing the issue of inequality and thereby creating a mutually respectful future.

From 4 March to 30 April, a series of events dedicated to women’s rights, #naistEST, raises questions about the unwritten roles in society - also from the Nordic point of view. The objective of the exhibitions, film programmes and discussions is to prompt people to notice the attitudes and behaviours that prevent women from realising their rights.

Three different exhibitions will be open to guests at the Museum of Occupations from 8 March to 30 April, which showcase the history of feminism in Estonia, the Nordic countries and France from different angles. From the Nordics, “Pioneering Feminist Foreign Policy. Women in Swedish diplomacy from 1632 till today” will be exhibited. Other exhibitions include “Cherchez la Femme” from France and “Jubilee year of Estonian women´s rights movement: Marie Reisik 130”.

Documentaries from the Nordic countries and France will be screened there from 16 March to 30 April, and discussions will also be held. From the Nordics, on 30 March 6 PM, Kristina Lindström´s “Astrid” (Sweden 2015) on the life of beloved Swedish children´s writer Astrid Lindgren will be screened. 11 April 6 PM, Mette Knudsen´s “The Long Road” on the women´s rights movement history in Denmark is shown. The screenings are for free.

A programme consisting Nordic short film about gender equality and four thematic feature films will be shown at the Artis Cinema from 4-7 March. “Balance” is the winner of the gender equality short filmcompetition for younsters held by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2014. The authors are Maria Winther Olsen (Faroe islands), Josefine Pil (Denmark) and Ane Mikkelsen (Denmark). The film programme compiled by the French Insitute of Estonia and the Estonian Institute of Human Rights also consists of “Violette”, “Summertime”, “Queen of the Mountains” and “Where Do We Go Now?”. The film programme is free of charge.

#naistEST is organised by the Museum of Occupations, the French Institute of Estonia, Feministeerium, the Estonian Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Estonian Institute of Human Rights.
