Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Dagfinn Høybråten will visit Estonia on Thursday, 24 April 2014 and meet with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia Taavi Rõivas and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Bank of Estonia Mart Laar. Høybråten and Rõivas will also discuss the biggest joint projects of the Nordic countries and Estonia in recent years.

The Nordic Council of Ministers launched its projects against human trafficking in the Baltic Sea region in 2002, with the Nordic-Baltic campaign against trafficking in women, which was recognised by the European Union as an example of successful regional cooperation.

The international expert project of 2013-2015 starts in Tallinn with the forum 'Trafficking in Human Beings: Recruitment, Identification, Victim Support' (23-25 April 2014). Høybråten will open the forum on 24 April in the Flower Pavilion in Tallinn with the Estonian Minister of the Interior and Regional Affairs Hanno Pevkur and the EU Anti-Trafficking Coordinator Myria Vassiliadou.

The second ongoing Nordic-Baltic project focusses on labour mobility and demographic developments. The Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of the Interior, the University of Tartu and other research institutions are involved in the project on the Estonian side.

In the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, the Nordic Council of Ministers coordinates bioeconomy in cooperation with the Council of the Baltic Sea States and currently analyses bioeconomy in the Baltic Sea region. The objective of bioeconomy is to achieve the most efficient use of biomass, develop industry across sectors, create new jobs and guarantee sustainable development in the Baltic Sea region.

The Nordic Council of Ministers was established in 1971 for official cooperation between the Nordic governments. In the spring of 1991, it opened offices in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to support the Baltic States. The task of the Estonian Office has been to bring together Nordic and Baltic experts, officials and politicians in areas of common interest.

Norwegian Dagfinn Høybråten has been politician for more than 30 years, and has held the posts of the Minister of Health, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs for the Christian Democratic Party. In addition, he has extensive experience as a civil servant, and, amongst other things, was head of the National Insurance Administration.
