"We must ask ourselves whether we can do more together to fight human trafficking", said the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, Dagfinn Høybråten, at a Nordic-Baltic meeting of the ministers of justice in Copenhagen on 29 August 2014.

In an increasingly globalised world, more and more crime is committed across country borders. Combating trafficking demands both cross-sectoral and international co-operation, and the Secretary General believes, therefore, that there is much to be won by common initiatives in the Nordic and Baltic Regions.

The European Union has highlighted the partnership between the Nordic countries and the Baltic States in their fight against human trafficking as an excellent example of regional cooperation. In the early 2000s all eight countries in the region launched a wide-ranging campaign against trafficking.

After completion of the successful project the Nordic Council of Ministers decided to continue with the cooperation on fight against trafficking in human beigns with Baltic States and North-West Russia. The new project is entitled 'Nordic – Baltic – North–West Russian Border Regional Cooperation Part II, Combating Trafficking in Human Beings for Forced Labour, Children and Sexual Exploitation' and it's opening event, Knowledge Forum I "Trafficking in Human Beings: Recruitment, Identification, Victim Support" took place in April 2014 in Tallinn, Estonia.

The objective of the project is to increase the awareness and competence of the participants and to reinforce the network of specialists working in the field - a smarter, faster and more effective fight against trafficking. The project is targeted to police officers, state prosecutors, judges, state officials and specialists helping victims in the Nordic countries, the Baltic States and North-West Russia.

The project will continue with an expert seminar on legal activities in Stockholm and knowledge forum on social consequences in Riga this November.
