The fourth green growth forum Rohevik opened at the Estonian University of Life Sciences in Tartu on Thursday 25 September. The theme of this year's forum is 'The bioeconomy: extending the value chain in agriculture and forestry'. Experts from Estonia, Sweden and Finland will be proffering solutions in regard to identifying new sources of biomass, finding new ways of using it and thereby increasing the breakthrough potential of enterprise.

"Innovation is born in the bioeconomy where different areas overlap," explained Madis Tilga from the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia, one of the organisers of the Rohevik forum. "You see it where forestry meets fishery, for example, or where medicine and fishery come together, or agriculture and the maritime economy. It leads to new products and new ways of saving on resources, including energy."

In order for the bioeconomy to take root, it is vital for the right conditions and network of contacts to be created among business people, scientists, politicians and policy makers.

RohevikThe topics that Rohevik 2014 will examine are as follows:

  • What is the bioeconomy and how can it profit both the economy and the environment?
  • What economic benefits can companies derive from the bioeconomy?
  • What are some of the success stories of the bioeconomy to date?
  • What are the future trends in the bioeconomy?

The programme and an introduction to the experts speaking at the event can be found online at www.rohevik.ee. A live broadcast of the forum can be viewed online at video.emu.ee. The ideas discussed at the forum will be posted on the Rohevik Facebook page and tweeted (hashtag: #Rohevik).

The Rohevik forum in Tartu is being organised by the Tartu Regional Energy Agency and the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia with the assistance of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, Tartu Science Park, the City of Tartu and the Association of Local Authorities of Tartu County.

Rohevik was launched in 2011 by the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia to bring together experts, business people and politicians from the Nordic countries and Baltic States whose joint goal is to achieve a sustainable lifestyle in the Baltic Sea region.
