Nordic-Baltic NGO support 2015 divided between five projects

Monday, 04 May 2015

The Nordic-Baltic Support Programme for NGOs received eight applications this spring. Five of them received support in the total amount of 335,000 Danish kroner or ca 45,000 euros.

"I would like to point out the project Outdoor Kindergarten – Sustainable Development in Everyday Practice of NGO Lapsed Õue, which received support to promote the idea of outdoor nursery schools in Estonia," says Merle Kuusk, who is responsible for the NGO support programme in the Nordic Council of Ministers' Office in Estonia.

Active parents who now operate as NGO Lapsed Õue had previously received support for learning about the idea of outdoor nursery schools in Nordic countries.

The activities have now grown and NGO Lapsed Õue is planning to organise four seminars in Tartu, which nursery school teachers, parents and other people working with children are invited to attend. Trainers from Sweden will take part in two events to share their experience of outdoor nursery schools. Lithuanian partner will speak about outdoor nursery schools in Vilnius.

Outdoor nursery schools are a recognised form of nursery school in Scandinavia and elsewhere in Europe, whose purpose is to raise the environmental awareness of children and promote a healthy lifestyle that will accompany them for the rest of their lives. Spending a lot of time outdoors improves children's health and develops their motor function, helps them focus, develops creativity, reduces stress and is essential for the development of the brain of children aged 3-6.

Outdoor nursery schools have been operating in Sweden since 1957 and in Finland since 1979, where 100,000 children attend outdoor nursery schools where they are looked after by 6000 teachers. Outdoor nursery schools are also operating in Norway, Lithuania, Denmark and Russia.
