RohevikGreen Growth Festival 'Rohevik'"During recent years a lot has been invested in property and fossil fuels instead of renewable energy, public transportation, water conservation or sustainable agriculture," stated Ville Niinistö, Finnish Minister of the Environment in his opening speech at a green growth conference in Tallinn, Estonia. The conference, 'Smart Growth. Green Transport' takes this approach emphasising the potential in environmentally friendly innovations in the Baltic Sea Region.

"It is important that governments set the scene for enterprises and other economic players. The investments need sound legislative ground and an enabling environment," spoke Niinistö at the conference in the Riigikogu, the Parliament of Estonia. He also stressed the unique opportunity that the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) provides if there's a will to go beyond "business as usual talk".

The high-level international conference 'Smart Growth. Green Transport' stressed the need to find new ways of generating energy, increasing the amount of energy produced from renewable sources and arranging transport in a new manner that is energy efficient and clean.

TampereTampere. © City of Tampere/Suomen Ilmakuva OyThe city of Tampere in Finland won the backing of an international jury in February for its ECO2 project, which represents a comprehensive urban planning concept that is easy to understand. The key to the implementation of the project is the involvement of the city's mayor and politicians and the development of a mechanism for city-wide coordination.

The business and education sectors in Tampere were also involved in the creation of the solution. In addition to the city itself, funding for the launch of the project was provided by the Finnish Innovation Fund (SITRA).

A conference held in Turku in Finland from 31 January to 2 February focussed on searching for ways of dealing with climate change. Its packed and very diverse programme included themed workshops involving participants from 18 countries and an awards ceremony to recognise those who had come up with the best climate solutions. One of the members of the jury was a representative of the Association of Estonian Cities.

A tapA common tap and the new tone for pre-filtered tap water. Photo: Grete Kodi/norden.eeWhen spreading ideas of environmental awareness and sustainable management, we can now rely on our own experience as well as set examples by our actions. Namely, participation in the Green Programme has given us not only the knowledge we and good conscience we need, but also direct savings thanks to smarter consumption – we have given up bottled water altogether.

We reached this decision after measuring the power consumption of our office equipment. The device that was constantly heating up and cooling water did not seem to be reasonable in its working logic. We now use pre-filtered tap water. The acquisition of a reverse osmosis device will pay off (together with four-year service intervals) in just 14 months. And all of our employees say that the water tastes better now.

Termination of power consumption outside of office hours will save us more than 9000 kroons and means that more than seven tonnes of carbon dioxide will not be emitted into the air. When purchasing electricity from Eesti Energia, everyone can easily calculate the resulting carbon footprint – about 1.1 kg CO2/kWh.

SeaMaritime safety is of key importance for the Baltic Sea region. Photo: norden.orgThe Nordic countries and the Baltic States together show the rest of Europe how successful regional cooperation can be in helping to emerge from the crisis, Jose Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, said at the Baltic Sea States Summit held in Vilnius on 2 June.

Barroso highlighted the joint efforts of the Nordic countries and Baltic States in their pursuit of sustainable development: removing barriers to trade, promoting cooperation on research and innovation and integrating energy networks.

"Maritime safety is of key importance for the entire Baltic Sea region, and we must engage in closer co-operation to ensure that safety," Matti Vanhanen, the Prime Minister of Finland, stressed. According to Vanhanen, the Baltic Sea countries lack the capacity to cope with disasters such as the one that currently plagues the Gulf of Mexico. "Most accidents happen due to human error," Vanhanen explained. "Thus, we need better control and information systems to map out exactly where ships are and where they are headed, just like we have at airports."

Juhan PeedimaaIn recent years we have expanded and found new customers in the Nordic countries. We hope that the right to use this logo will raise our reputation in the eyes of our new customers even more.

The Nordic Eco-label – gateway to the Nordic markets

The SwanA lot of people are feeling despair due to climate change caused by human activities. At the same time everybody can do something for a sustainable future. Buying eco-labelled products is one way to be a sustainable consumer and thereby preserve the natural habitat.

Click here for presentations, booklets, research papers, etc on the Nordic Eco-label!

The Nordic eco-label is a voluntary scheme for business. The label evaluates the product's impact on the environment throughout its whole lifecycle. For example, in evaluating the product's climate impact it tests whether CO2 (and other harmful gases) emissions do not exceed certain levels. Some products influence global warming more than others and in these cases only "the best in class" can be awarded an eco-label – for example laptop computers, washing machines and other electric and electronic appliances. All of these products must meet strict requirements for energy consumption.

The Nordic Council of Ministers, thereby the Nordic governments, decided in 1989 to introduce common official eco-labelling, which would help consumers to select the best products. Its chosen symbol was a green swan – a variation on the logo of the Nordic Council of Ministers. It is an ISO 14024 type 1 Eco-labelling system.

The SwanFrom small beginnings in the early 90s, the Nordic Eco-label is now one of the world's most successful eco-labels. In every Scandinavian country there are local offices that deal with criteria development, applications, licensing and marketing. The national agencies for the Nordic Eco-label are also responsible for EU Eco-labelling in the Nordic countries. The Nordic Eco-label is also a member of the Global Eco-labelling Network, which is a worldwide association of eco-labelling organisations.

Why apply for Nordic Eco-labelling?

The Swan-logo is very well known in Nordic countries and while buying products and services both ordinary consumers as well as experts are guided by the existence of the eco-label.

As recent research revealed, the Swan is known to 97% of Swedish consumers, 94% in Norway, 82% in Denmark, 88% in Finland and 60% in Iceland. Therefore one can claim that the Swan is a key to the Nordic market!

What costs are accompanied by the Eco-label?

Companies applying for the Eco-label have to pay an application fee that will cover the administration of the application and the control visit to the applicant. In addition, the applicant has to cover travel expenses for the control visit if the manufacturing plant is outside the Nordic countries.

Once the license has been granted, there is an annual charge for products carrying the Swan label to which the license applies. There is a different fee for different products and services.

Contact one of the Nordic offices to determine exactly what the fees are for certain type of product or service.

Ecoprint awarded Nordic ecolabel

Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:29

The SwanThe Tartu County-based printing company Ecoprint successfully completed an audit by the official Nordic ecolabel Swan in April which recognised that its production processes and products conform to the ecolabel's standards. Ecoprint therefore has the right to begin marking its products with the Swan logo – confirmation anywhere in Europe that the product is environmentally friendly.

"Being awarded the right to use the Swan ecolabel has been one of our objectives since we started up our environmentally friendly 'Green Publication' product group," explained Juhan Peedimaa, the director of Ecoprint. "We've been expanding over the last year and found ourselves new clients in the Nordic countries. We hope that being able to use the label will boost our reputation in their eyes."
