May is World Environment Month, as part of which ETV and ETV2 will be showing a series of documentaries and programmes in association with the Estonian Ministry of the Environment and the Estonian office of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The television channels will be focussing on environmental problems, but also examining visions of the creation of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable living environment.

Amongst other things, viewers will get to see the 12-part Finnish series 'Up To Here' (Mitta on täysi, 2009), which looks at critical environmental issues in a new light, including the environmental efficiency of means of transport, aspects of the industrial production of meat and the pluses and minuses of wind energy.

'Up To Here' can be seen at 10.50 am on Sundays on ETV2, with repeats on ETV on Tuesday afternoons.

The topics examined in forthcoming episodes have been given the following brief descriptions:

Episode 7 – 16 May: 'Electric cars et al.'
Has the motor vehicle industry got anything new and interesting to offer the environmentally minded?

Episode 8: 'Flexing muscles with China'
The producers of the series managed to find two textiles manufacturers – one in Germany and the other in Finland – who are convinced that manufacturing in their own countries is still possible at a time when most of their competitors are using cheap foreign labour. At the same time, there are indications that China is no longer willing to accept its status as a provider of cheap labour, but has started to turn cash flow to its own advantage.

Episode 9: 'The heaviness of lightness'
This episode highlights the virtues and shortcomings of fashionable 'light' food products, with one Finnish family experimenting by eating only fat and sugar-free foods for an entire month. The experiment is designed to prove whether eating light food is the answer for the 20% of the country's population who are struggling with weight problems.
