Christmas time in Tartu

The central square of Tartu became the port of the Christmas Town on the first advent of 2009. You can write to Santa Claus, visit exhibitions, listen to concerts, shop on the market and enjoy the festive spirit in Tartu Christmas Towns.

This year, you can learn about the Christmas traditions of Nordic countries: cafés in the city centre will offer traditional Nordic Christmas food and activities related to the Christmas traditions of Nordic countries will be held in the city's museums and centres. You can also visit exciting displays and exhibitions. Five Christmas trees will be decorated in the Town Hall Square according to the traditions of all five Nordic countries – Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland – on St Lucy's Day on 13 December. You can watch the St Lucy's procession on the main square of Tartu in the evening – it consists of girls dressed in white and carrying candles and crowns of candles who bring to us a part of the legend that is well known in the Nordic countries. The third advent candle will be lit from the candles carried by the girls in the St Lucy's procession.

The oratorio concert in Jaani Church on 19 December is a long-awaited event. The "Christmas Oratorio" ("Ett Juloratorium") composed by Andreas Hallen will be performed at the concert.
