Book presentation: "Three Norse Sagas from Ancient Times"
Welcome to the presentation of "Kolm saagat Põhjamaade muinasajast" ("Three Norse Sagas from Ancient Times"), a new book containing three ancient Icelandic sagas translated into Estonian (Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks, Egils saga einhenda ok Ásmundar berserkjabana and Eíreks saga viðförla).
Norse sagas from ancient times represent common Nordic history whereas Iceland plays a significant role in Estonia's history. Iceland was the first nation to recognise Estonia's independence again in 1991. The Nordic Council of Ministers' offices in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius were opened the very same year - as one of the first foreign representations in the new republics. The book presentation is one of the series of events in the agenda of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the NCM Office in Estonia.
The event will be chaired by the secretary of administrative affairs at the embassy of Iceland Päivi Kumpulainen; professor of Scandinavian Studies at Tartu University Daniel Sävborg; head of the Tartu branch of the NCM Office in Estonia Madis Kanarbik; and the translator of the book, Mart Kuldkepp.
There will be presentations on the Icelandic saga literature, the sagas presently published, and the translator's experiences of translating the book. Afterwards there will be readings from the new book and plenty of good food and drinks!
Musical performance by Tui Hirv (soprano), Faristamo Leis (piano) and Páll Ragnar Pálsson (guitar).
