New website promotes Nordic energy solutions

Monday, 04 October 2010

The Nordic Council of Ministers envisages the Region becoming a leading exporter of sustainable energy solutions and is launching a new website to promote Nordic expertise.

In 2007, the Nordic prime ministers agreed on a joint approach to promoting sustainable energy solutions.

The website "Nordic Energy Solutions" will serve as a window to the world for Nordic solutions in renewable energy technology, research and development, as well as political approaches to sustainable energy use.

The project is part of the Nordic globalisation initiative that forms the basis for innovative partnerships on the climate, the environment research and education. By building on existing Nordic positions of strength the Region will be able to contribute to international efforts to switch to sustainable energy systems.

"The Nordic countries have long traditions of sustainable energy production, and this provides the Region with a unique opportunity to be a leading exporter of renewable solutions. Partnership between the countries enables the Region to make a greater impact at international level," says Jørgen Calundann, who heads the Nordic Council of Ministers' work on renewable energy.

"A joint information campaign will further whet the appetite for Nordic solutions and spread knowledge of Nordic expertise among decision makers looking for sustainable solutions to energy and climate problems," he says.

"This web-based platform will help the Nordic countries market their experiences of spreading technology, of successful institutional structures and of models for partnership that have made the Region a global leader in this area," he adds.

Publicising positive examples of renewable energy and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important, especially in the run up to the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen later this year.

The foundations for future international work on the climate will be laid in 2009. The website is one of a number of joint initiatives designed to disseminate information about Nordic experiences that compliment national strategies in this important area. The project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and co-ordinated by Nordic Energy Research on behalf of the Renewable Energy Working Group.

Representatives of the Nordic energy authorities and ministries have been actively involved in the development of the website, as have other relevant working groups and institutions. The website will be expanded later on to cover energy efficiency solutions.
