Give Escapism a Chance ?

Friday, 01 October 2010

Entertainment is a crucial issue for Public Service Broadcasting. There are those who claim that the survival of Public Service Broadcasting depends on whether the channels are able to find a more defined role for Public Service Entertainment. The Finnish researcher Teemu Palokangas suggests that broadcast entertainment and pleasure should be perceived as an opportunity for escapism and the broadening of our horizons, rather than the threat we have come to perceive it as in the current climate of mass culture critique. We should give escapism a chance.

The Nordic Council of Ministers and the Estonian Public Broadcasting are organizing a joint conference on the role of entertainment in Public Service Broadcasting on June 2, 2008 in Tallinn starting at 10 am at UniqueStay Hotel, Kaval-Antsu talu, Toompuiestee 23. The official languages of the Forum are Estonian and English.
