Police, border police, border guards, representatives of NGOs and experts in the field of human trafficking from the Nordic countries, the Baltic States and north-western Russia are meeting for the first time this month in Helsinki as part of a joint project entitled 'Trafficking in Human Beings with a Focus on Forced Labour, Children and Sexual Exploitation'.

Sharing their experiences at the event will be Finnish police officers who took part in the mobility programme of the Nordic-Baltic Network of Policewomen (NBNP) in 2009 and 2010. The attendees will also be taking part in a Nordic conference in the Finnish capital on human trafficking and forced labour. Furthermore, two additional study trips will be held in 2013 as part of the project: one to Stockholm and Oslo in April and another to Ivangorod, Narva and Tallinn in June.

The aims of the international project are to study new forms of human trafficking, to showcase Nordic agencies and their achievements and to promote best practice employed by police and border guards from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and north-western Russia in the fight against human trafficking. The project will broaden the knowledge and competence of officials who come into contact with human trafficking as part of their everyday work. It is also important to reinforce regional cooperation and to create national networks in the fight against human trafficking.

The project is being carried out by the NBNP in association with the Nordic Council of Ministers' (NCM) Office in Estonia and other partners. Funding for the project is being provided by the NCM.

A total of 60 officials will take part in the three study trips, who will then recount their experiences and share the knowledge they have gained at the closing conference to be held in Tallinn in June 2013.

More information about the fight against human trafficking in the Nordic countries can be found online here.

The adviser responsible for the project in the Estonian office of the NCM is Merle Kuusk.
