The Nordic Council of Ministers approved 22 projects for grants totalling EUR 150 000, providing an opportunity for the expansion of free and independent minority language media in Baltic countries. Freelance journalists and newsrooms in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia applied for grants of up to €10.000 for maximum duration of one year.

The projects were granted approximately EUR 50 000 in each of 3 countries. 5 pro-jects were approved in Estonia, 9 projects in Latvia and 8 in Lithuania. The Evalua-tion Committees, which met in August-September 2017, selected the projects from among 62 proposals submitted by local media publishers and freelance journalists. Successful Estonian projects were submitted by the following media outlets: Radio4, Prospekt Media, NGO Kultuuritahvel and Edasi.org.

The Nordic Council of Ministers’ Baltic media grant scheme was designed to in-crease the quality and attractiveness of local, media in the Baltic countries with a special focus on inclusive content in minority languages and ethnically diverse re-gions. Christer Haglund, director of the Nordic Council of Ministers´ office in Esto-nia: "We are glad to support news outlets in their efforts to cover important topics for minorities in their own languages." The grant scheme aimed to encourage jour-nalists to use distinctive storytelling ideas and new engaging content forms to in-form Baltic audiences.

The winners were chosen because of their genuine story ideas and innovative multi-platform approaches, presenting multiple promising investigative and visual jour-nalism projects. To convey complex development stories in engaging ways, the winning projects will make use of podcasts, 360-video, new format radio shows, web-documentaries, graphic animations, video interviews and more.

All grantees begin implementation of the projects in autumn of 2017 and shall finish until the end of September 2018.
