Sweden holds the presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2018. The foundation of the Swedish presidency programme is inclusion, innovation, and security, with digitalisation a recurrent theme throughout the programme.

Sweden’s presidency programme, which forms the basis for Nordic inter-governmental co-operation in 2018, is divided into three priority areas:

    An inclusive Nordic Region

This area is born out of a number of challenges common to all the Nordic countries. Digital solutions for remote care, the social inclusion of young people, and a labour market policy that offers better opportunities for entering employment are key points in the programme.

A sustainable and innovative Nordic Region

This area focuses on Nordic innovation as a driving force for sustainable social change. Sweden wants to step up co-operation on the bioeconomy, sustainable construction, and climate-smart transport.

A safe and open Nordic Region

Sweden wants to elevate the broad security issues that affect the Nordic Region. The countries will exchange knowledge about how best to prevent radicalisation, organised crime, terrorism, and human trafficking.
The five joint initiatives of the Nordic prime ministers - Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges - also feature in the presidency programme. The initiatives aim to share Nordic solutions and experiences that may help to achieve the UN’s sustainable development goals as part of Agenda 2030.
