Age-friendly communities: City Living Across Generations

Thursday, 09 May 2024

On May 17th at 12:00 you will find us at the (eel)Arvamusfestival in Tartu where we will be talking about age-friendly communities. The purpose of the discussion “City Living Across Generations” is to promote inclusion in all age groups and pave the way for a more socially and environmentally sustainable future. The discussion topic was inspired by the conference on "Age-Friendly Cities in the Nordic Region", which took place in Copenhagen in November 2023.

In an era marked by demographic shifts, the notion of age-friendly communities has risen to the forefront of social discourse. It is necessary to understand the challenges and opportunities of a diverse population from many angles and to implement solutions that support the needs of different age groups. The experience of the Nordic countries in creating age-friendly communities offers a valuable lesson that can also be adapted to the Estonian context where solving problems related to aging is becoming more and more important.

It is important to understand that the challenges associated with aging do not only affect the elderly, but affect society as a whole. Therefore, it is necessary to involve different parties - from policy makers to community members - in making decisions and finding solutions. This helps ensure that the communities created are truly inclusive and support the needs of all residents.

Sharing their expertise and insights will be Thórhildur Guðrún Egilsdóttir (Manager, Office for Ageing, Department of Welfare, City of Reykjavik, Iceland), Louise Scheel Thomasen (Senior Adviser, Nordic Welfare Centre), Riin Seidla (Health Specialist, Department of Social Welfare and Health Care, Tartu City Government, Estonia) and Agu Laius (Head of Advocacy, Golden League NGO, Estonia). The discussion will be led by PhD Sirle Salmistu (Senior lecturer, Tallinn University of Technology, Tartu College; Landscape Architect and Urban Planner, Estonia)

Join the conversation and think along on the spot in Tartu, at the "Back to the Future" area or online on Friday, May 17 at 12:00! Only together can we create a living environment that supports everyone regardless of age.
