Why has the narrative of Estonia as a Nordic country been so persistent and popular? What is seen in Estonia that corresponds to the Nordic identity and value set? How much do these visions resemble the Scandinavian understanding of what constitutes ‘northern’? Can something be found from the social experience of Estonia that could inspire and set an example for the Nordic countries?

We will strive to find answers to those and many other questions during the “Estonia AND the Nordic countries – Estonia AS a Nordic country?” conference, which starts at 10:00 in KUMU on 23 August. The conference is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of Estonia.

The conference will take a closer look at identity and value issues in Estonia’s society, by focusing on a question that has been widely discussed: is Estonia part of the Nordic countries? The purpose of different presentations and panel discussions is to explain what unites Estonia with and distinguishes us from the Nordic countries in terms of our values.

Speakers include: Bi Puranen – Secretary General of the World Values Survey Association, and Associate Professor of Economic History at the University of Stockholm and the Institute for Future Studies in Sweden; Anu Realo – Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Tartu, and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Warwick; Valdur Mikita – semiotician and Professor of Liberal Arts at the University of Tartu; Mart Kuldkepp - Lecturer in Scandinavian History at University College London.
Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion.

The best works submitted to the competition for opinion pieces and photos related to the conference will be announced at the event.

The conference is being organised by the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Research, the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Estonia, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Embassy of Sweden, the Royal Danish Embassy and the Embassy of Finland.
