Many countries have shown interest in the development of Nordic care policies. Nordic welfare systems are known for ensuring social security for all, with special emphasis on families with children. Although the Nordic countries have much in common, individual nations have chosen different ways to support parents.

The Centre for Gender Equality and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Security will be hosting a Nordic conference on Parental leave, Care Policies and Gender Equalities. The conference will be held on October 22 in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. The research looks at how parental leave is used in the Nordic countries and how it affects health, the relationship between parents and children and the status of men and women in the labor market.

Gender equality is one of the priorities of the Icelandic Presidency of the Nordic Council of Ministers 2009.
