2013 is the Year of Language (Språkåret) in Norway. The Scandinavian Department of the University of Tartu is marking the occasion with a special conference entitled Det norske språket – historie, gjenfødelse og liv ('The history, rebirth and life of the Norwegian language').

It has been 200 years since the birth of Ivar Aasen, who created Norway's second written language, which is based on the country's dialects (as opposed to the written language at the time, which had developed from written Danish). Last year also marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Knud Knudsen, the 'grandfather' of bokmål, the other written Norwegian language in question.

The Scandinavian Department of the University of Tartu invites everyone interested in Norwegian to take part in the conference.
