‘Ups!’ caricatures and comics tell Nordic stories

Monday, 23 November 2015

The visual arts exhibition ‘Ups!’ weaves a narrative of bigger and smaller, lesser-known and better-known Nordic stories. The exhibition has already been seen at Harju County Library in Keila, and will be taking up residence at the Eduard Vilde Museum in Tallinn from 25 November-5 January. It will then move to Narva College, where it will remain from 8 January-1 February.

Using humour, biographical material and myths, the artists depict memories of the past, human relationships and key contemporary themes, creating narratives that focus on human nature rather than the natural environment of the Nordic countries.

Visitors will find themselves transported to a Nordic fantasy world where caricatures and comics provide inspiration and represent fully-fledged, independent works of art. The works in the exhibition unveil a perception of comic art that presents to the viewer stories which are expressed graphically, as illustrations or through textiles, paintings or installations.

The idea behind the exhibition came from Nordic House on the Faroe Islands, but in addition to Faroese artists, visual and comic artists from Iceland, Finland, Sweden and Denmark are also represented. The exhibition was first shown in Nordic House in autumn 2014 before relocating to Northern Atlantic House in Copenhagen in 2015 and then the comics festival in Helsinki and the Nordic Institute on the Åland Islands.

Exhibition conceived by Sif Gunnarsdóttir, director, Nordic House, Faroe Islands
Exhibition curated by Lotte Nishanthi Winther, Master of Arts in Art
