Narva and Tartu are candidate cities for the title of European Capital of Culture 2024, and Kuressaare has also showed interest. Estonia has previous experience of this when Tallinn held the title in 2011. But what is the experience of Nordic cities like – what are the positives and negatives of being the capital of culture? Which opportunities does this create for the local communities and what can Estonian cities learn from the experience of Nordic ones? A seminar dedicated to this was held in Narva on 23 May and in Tartu on 24 May, which welcomed everyone who wants to contribute to the capital of culture project one way or another.

The experience of Nordic cities was shared by: Suvi Innila, programme manager of Turku the Capital of Culture 2011 (Finland) and Jan Boringe, executive director of Umeå the Capital of Culture 2014 (Sweden). Anne-Britt Noro and Hendrik Sand Dagfinrud, project managers of Bodø 2024 (Norway), also spoke about applying. Kalle Paas from Tartu and Helen Sildna from the Narva team spoke about the plans of Estonia. The Narva seminar was moderated by Jevgeni Timoštšuk, programme coordinator for the Narva branch of the Estonian Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers, and the event in Tartu by Erni Kask, project manager of Tartu 2024.

The event was organised in cooperation with the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Embassy of Sweden and the Finnish Institute.
