Nordic Week 2018 Nordic Week 2018

The Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office and Nordic embassies in Estonia are once again presenting the now traditional annual event, Nordic Culture Week in Ida-Viru County. Taking place from 12-17 November, the event will invite participants to discover the Nordic philosophy of life and uncover the reasons behind the happiness and well-being for which the day-to-day lives of people in the Nordic countries are renowned.

People in the Nordic region are considered to be the happiest in the world. This year’s World Happiness Report by the United Nations ranked Finland first overall, followed by Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The events forming part of Nordic Culture Week are designed to shed light on the formula for Nordic happiness and well-being and to share the region’s values.

We will be showcasing hygge, the Danish philosophy of relaxing together in cosy surroundings, and championing the Norwegian saying Ut på tur, aldri sur, which roughly translates as ‘You can never be in a bad mood when hiking’ and which reflects the place that hiking has in the hearts of people in Norway.

We will be explaining the roles that fika and lagom play in the everyday lives of Swedes and what sisu means as one of the foundations of Finland as a nation.

We will be sharing tips given by people from the Nordic region on coping with your workaday routine and getting through the long, dark days of winter.

Nordic Culture Week, which is being held for the fourth time, offers a diverse programme of events for adults and children alike: exhibitions, films, themed get-togethers and debates and plenty of exciting experiences, ranging from Finnish saunas to Nordic cuisine.

The festival’s organisers and partners are the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Estonia, the Nordic embassies in Estonia, the Finnish Institute, Narva College of the University of Tartu, Narva Central Library, the City of Narva Development Foundation, Muna café and Narva Apollo Astri cinema.
