Jump into the modern education system with the help of business

Monday, 14 June 2010

Lessons with GPS, Bluetooth, RFID and sensor networks represent the future of education. The student's mobile phone is the tool. The goal of Mobile Learning Environments, the project supported by the Nordic Innovation Centre, is to help create a school environment where modern ICT (information and communications technology) tools are an inseparable part of learning.

Mobile Learning Environments is based on the understanding that the practices and methods of the education system speak less and less to the so-called digital natives and that use of modern technologies and methods can make learning more interesting.

The prototype of a study programme based on mobile technology was created in the course of the project and three different ICT platforms were created for the solution. The tools used in the project were Nokia and Windows smart phones and a computer network equipped with sensors to which Bluetooth, RFID, sound and several input and output sensors had been planted. The solution was tested on Danish, Finnish and Swedish students aged 14 to 16.

The date collected as a result of the project analysis have clear outputs in business, technology and education. Mobile technology is one of the solutions with undiscovered opportunities that would inspire digital natives. It would also open the door to creative business in the area of ICT that so far has been kept at a rather safe distance from the education system.

The consortium of ICT companies and education institutions that led the project prepared guidelines and recommendations for companies that wish to enter the markets where mobile education is offered. A new market that demands creative solutions is offered to IT companies in such a manner. The growth potential of the market is vast and calls for the growth of companies operating in this area in the next few years.

As the role of teachers will also have to change, the project participants also developed guidelines for those who wish to use mobile ICT in teaching.
It is important for the new solutions not to be technologically and pedagogically competent alone, but they also have to fit into the specific environment as a means of communication. Successful solutions are hidden in the confluence of user-friendly design and these three features.
