Nordic ministers reject the idea of a new union

Tuesday, 28 September 2010

The proposal of renowned historical Gunnar Wetterberg to create a federal Nordic state that would be similar to the former Kalmar and headed by Queen of Denmark Margarethe II did not impress of the heads of governments at today’s Nordic summit in Stockholm.

Wetterberg made his proposal, which created considerable furore, in today’s issue of the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter. Wetterberg believes that a federal Nordic state would be more influential on the international stage than each Nordic country separately, because Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland together form the tenth biggest economic region of the world.

The prime ministers, the head of the Danish government Lars Løkke Rasmussen included, confirmed at the press conference held after the session of the Nordic Council today, on 27 October, that current cooperation between Nordic countries is strong and efficient enough to stand up against the challenges of globalisation in issues of climate, environment and energy.
